Creative writing group lets locals showcase their flair in Wigan

We love all forms of creative writing including short stories, poetry, novel writing, and children’s stories. This is a very relaxed, informal group of amateur scribblers who meet to share ideas, inspire, and encourage each other in our writing endeavours.

The group was formed last year following a short creative writing course held by one of our members who is a published author. We enjoyed our writing attempts and each other’s company so much we decided to continue to meet on a weekly basis, so Away with words creative writing group was born!

We are also delighted to announce that the group has just been awarded funding from Wigan council – Deal for communities, which will help us to buy training materials and pay for guest speakers.

Creative writing is an absorbing, enjoyable hobby that needs very little equipment, just a pen and paper will do. Writing is an excellent form of self-care, offering the writer an outlet for feelings and emotions.

When we write down our ideas, we push ourselves to organise them in a logical manner. This can be beneficial for persons who suffer from mental health issues, since it allows them to focus on one job at a time. Creative writing and the company of like-minded people is very beneficial to good mental health.
