Sam Walters admits he had accepted that he was unlikely to feature at Wembley in the Challenge Cup Final earlier this month due to his limited minutes, but is now ready to build on his performances and put his name into the mix for future big games at Wigan Warriors.

The off-season recruit returned from a broken collarbone to make his official debut in the semi-final win over Hull KR in May, and later started in the 19-18 victory at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

But the talented 23-year-old knew that his chances of featuring under the arch were narrow due to his long-term injury, named as 18th man as the Warriors went on to claim a record-extending 21st Challenge Cup trophy over Warrington Wolves.

“Limited minutes probably played the biggest factor, and I understood it,” Walters reflected.

“I processed it in my head when I was injured that I was probably going to miss out on some of the big games.

“Even to be in the picture was a big positive for myself.

“Moving forward, when we do get to those big games, I want to be involved.

“Being 18th man down in London was an amazing experience on its own, so I can’t imagine what it would be like in the team and playing.”

The former Leeds forward marked his third Wigan appearance with an 80 minute performance in the recent 10-8 win over Castleford Tigers, with a display that included more metres than any other forward.

He is set to make his home debut this Friday against London Broncos in Round 15, before the competition takes an international break with Shaun Wane’s England set to take on France.

“I’m really excited,” Walters said of his first home appearance.

“I’ve obviously been supporting from the sidelines, so to get that opportunity to run out and feel that crowd on your back and almost add another player on the pitch when you need them, it’ll be a great atmosphere.

“I’m sort of finding my feet with my minutes and trying to build on each performance at the moment.

“It’s still pretty new to me and I’ve not cemented a spot yet, so for me it’s about doing my bit for the team when I’m out there and hopefully my best is yet to come.”
